Welcome to York U3A Language and Linguistics

Time, place and cost

Time: The second Thursday of each month from 2.00- 4.00

The group normally meets in the Friends' Meeting House.  In some months, in-person meetings are replaced by Zoom meetings, and sometimes we meet in a private city-centre garden.  There are occasional email exchanges and discussion between meetings.

Details of meeting venue and format, including any cost of room hire, are circulated to group members by email.

This group aims to explore all aspects of language and the way we use it, including conversation, language learning, language change, dialects and the language of literature. Members are invited to suggest topics that interest them, and offers to lead sessions are very welcome.

This is not a course covering a set syllabus over a given period, nor is it a foreign language course. Rather, it is an on-going meeting to explore mainly the English language and, while we do sometimes refer to other languages, no linguistic knowledge is assumed.

Possible topics for 2023/24 include: accent and dialect; philosophy and language; endangered languages; chatbots; swearing; common expressions and their origins.

Please contact the leader if you would like to join the group.
